Movement Therapy: Biodanza

Biodanza (type of a movement and dance therapy) is a unique system that connects movement, music and the experience of participants. This leads to deeper self-awareness and self-development.
The emphasis is on the experience of here and now, the uniqueness of each of us and authentic encounters with others.

Therefore Biodanza can be seen as

a meditation in motion, during which we let go of our thought patterns.
a technique of self-discovery and sef-development, as it brings space to try new things, be inspired by others, and become aware of our limits and boundaries.
dance therapy during which you can gradually heal your injuries and traumas.
(However, Biodanza is always group-based, and I personally recommend it more as a complement to other types of therapy.)

Summer is a time for many when they have more energy, but there’s also a lot more going on – from seeing friends and taking vacations to renovations and filling in for colleagues at work.

It’s also often a time when we enjoy life more fully – whether it’s through travel, sunshine and nature, or longer days.

Finding joy in the day-to-day, perspective and ease through relaxation and trust, can open for us unexpected possibilities. Both in our contentment in life and in our relationships with others.

Come to recharge, relax, meet new people and yourself. And gradually you will invite joy and ease and new possibilities into your life.

Taking a morning for yourself in the middle of the week? Strange for some, great timing for others. To get out of the work rhythm for a while and give yourself a chance to look at things differently. Or just to recharge and feel energized for the rest of the week.

Connect with the flow of life. In simplicity. Lightness and joy.

The Viviences (Biodanza lessons) and their themes build loosely on each other in the cycle, leading to a gradual deepening of experience. However, it is possible to join at any time. For it is about experiential movement, not choreography and steps.

FAQ: Before the 1st Movement Therapy / Biodanza

What if I can’t dance?

This might be a great advantage, since you don’t need to unlearn the established patterns of „correct“ dancing. Biodanza is not about being pretty, it’s about our expression, attunement with the other, feeling our body.

I don’t have anyone to dance with me. Is it better to come with someone?

It doesn’t matter, most people come alone. It also has the added benefit of not trying to fit into a certain role (in front of that someone).
And yes, there are some dances in pairs – but we switch the couple several times during one song. So you wouldn’t dance together as much anyway. So if you were planning a romantic evening with your significant other, I would recommend to choose another activity.

What to do if I’m embarrassed to dance in front of others?

Don’t worry, you won’t dance in front of anyone. Everyone else will also be dancing or doing the movement. So they won’t have time to watch you.
(This is also what participants are usually saying: First I was little worried but at the end of the day, I really focuse mainly on myself. I don’t really capacity to check the others)
At the same time, there is no talking during the biodanza (except for the facilitator who introduces each exercise), so there is no need to worry about awkward small talks.

What should I wear/bring?

A water bottle and comfortable clothes for dancing/moving will definitely come in handy. We dance barefoot and in comfortable clothes.
Ladies, if you want to feel beautiful, feel free to wear a dress, I used to dance in dress a lot in past. Just expect to spend part of the evening on the floor.
Gentlemen, try to come in what you are comfortable in and preferably not outright stiff material like jeans – sweatpants or cotton pants are the ideal choice.
Besides, part of the class is slower, so feel free to pack a sweater or sweatshirt in the winter if you know that you tend to be cold. If, on the other hand, you sweat a lot, you won’t go wrong with a small towel in summer (for active part of class).

Biodanza is a unique movement system that combines movement, music and the experience of the participants. This leads to deeper self-awareness and self-development. The emphasis is on the experience of the here and now, the uniqueness of each of us and authentic encounters with others.

Unlike other movement system such a 5 rhythms or movement medicine, in biodanza you will get some instruction before each exercise / dance. And also being encourage to time by time meet with someone or with whole group. The reason for it is to break up our stereotypes in order to allow deeper connection with oneself, other person / people, the universe. At the same time for the same reason, the founder of biodanza recommended the weekly classes for 2-3years and then to come for weekend workshop time by time.
